Shreya, 28, from Berkshire

“Cervical cancer runs in my family, so it’s important for me to stay on top of my health and know what’s happening in my body. I want to have children one day, so I want to be in the best health possible. My recent screening came back with borderline changes, so I went for a colposcopy and did a biopsy. While I’m lucky that my examinations came back non-cancerous, they idea that they could’ve been, and I wouldn’t have known if I didn’t get screened, is scary.”

Daghi Rajasingham, NHS South East Deputy Medical Director

“Cervical screening saves lives and is something to be prioritised – yet too many young women put off their screening, often out of fear and uncertainty. We want young women to take charge of their health by attending their cervical screening when invited. Your health matters – book yours today.”

Hear about cervical screening experiences from our patients:

I was very anxious to attend the practice for a smear test and became extremely distressed. Nurse Andrea and Dr Amrit Khera were extremely caring and supportive, allowing me to compete the test. I am grateful for their care and passion for helping me and taking the time to make me feel at ease.

My nurse was just amazing – I think her name was Anthea? It was my first time having a smear test and I was really nervous. She was so friendly, gentle and comforting. Her patient care was truly outstanding and she made sure I was OK all the way. She talked me through every step and gave me all the background details. Sometimes the empathy and kindness is the most important thing. Always have a good experience here at Hatherton and I mentioned that to her.

I struggle severely with anxiety during procedures such as smears, the nurse that dealt with me was honestly incredible. She was so reassuring and calm with me during and made me feel so much better ultimately easing my nerves and making the experience less daunting for me. I can’t remember her name unfortunately but she deserves so much recognition and praise, she is what all nurses should be like πŸ™‚

Lisa is fantastic. I never used to attend my annual smear due to negative experience before but Lisa has put me at ease, explains everything perfectly and I feel comfortable asking her questions also and I have since attended every year since she has been there
